Using light versus dark and minimal colour, create dramatic sepia-effect portraits on mid-tone backgrounds in this mixed media workshop.

We will work loosely based on photographic references - feel free to bring some of your own photo references, or be inspired by a wide range available on the day. Experience of portrait drawing is helpful, but not essential. Ideal workshop for anyone wanting to loosen up their drawing skills, experiment on mid tone paper, or try something new in the field of portraiture.

Peter ToshPeter ToshMedium: Pastel on mid-tone paper.

Dimensions: Approximately A3. 420 x 297 mm

Date: May 2005

Comments:
Peter Tosh (1944-87) was a close friend and colleague of Jamaican reggae artist Bob Marley (1945-81). Together with Bunny Wailer (born 1947), they formed the pioneering group The Wailers. Of this trio, Tosh was perhaps the most sombre, reflective and intense. He seems to capture the spirit of the biblical Sampson, the dreadlocked Nazirite whose mighty strength lay in his long hair. Like Sampson, Tosh was a formidable foe to his enemies, aptly nicknamed the 'Stepping Razor'. Tosh was brutally murdered during a burglary at his home on September 11 1987. Loosely based on a photograph.
