Completed
in about 2 hours, this was my first
attempt at using a freer, more expressive
style, no doubt spurred on by the
fearlessness of the gaze. I was most
captivated by the intensity of the eyes,
framed by the severe eyebrows, and stern,
uncompromising expression. The photograph
of Walter Hyde (1875-1951), operatic
tenor, on which I based this painting
depicts Hyde in his Wagnerian role as
Siegmund, the Norse warrior, in Richard
Wagner's music drama trilogy The Ring
of the Nibelungs.
