Hungarian
pianist and composer, Franz Liszt (1811-1886). As
often, I was moved by the intensity of
the eyes and eagle-like expression. A man
of vast charisma and virtuosic skill,
Franz Liszt ranks among my favourite
composers of the Romantic era. I
particularly love his piece Les Jeaux
d'Eau a la Villa d'Este (1870), for
its beautiful evocation of gently
trickling water fountains and its
spiritual overtones. As here depicted, in
his later life Liszt (at least to some
extent) took holy orders and devoted
himself to the religious life.
