From
life, using a mirror, taking about three
hours to complete.
There are always unique challenges
associated with self-portraiture, not
least in purely practical terms of
working via a mirror (sometimes more than
one). Many friends who know me well have
commented that this image is very true to
life; it is more my hope that I have
captured certain traits of character and
thus approached closer to an
understanding of myself. The image has
sometimes seemed to me to be
self-reproaching, at other times I have
noticed more its placidity; inevitably,
my perception of it is largely coloured
by my present frame of mind. Overall, I
find it has grown on me, and I like it
more now than I did at first.
Due to using a single mirror, I had to
'cheat' slightly, by drawing the
miniature map of Africa on my pendant the
right way round! This was a favourite
pendant for many years and a reference to
the vast influence of the Rastafarian
tradition on my life, philosophy,
spirituality and art. I claim no recent
African descent, but have been greatly
inspired by the Rastafarian message of
universal love, respect and brotherhood.
In my Words of Wisdom website, a study
of biblical quotations in reggae song
lyrics, I have composed a number of
articles on various themes related to the
Rastafarian path. |
