Based on
a photograph, taking one and a half
hours. Portrait of my late grandmother.
I drew this portrait from a photograph
taken by my brother shortly before my
grandmother passed on; hence, it has a
deep personal significance. But equally I
have been touched by the comments of many
people who have seen this image and
expressed the feeling that she is still
very much alive and almost speaks to us
through the drawing.
I was very close to my grandmother from
earliest childhood, and spent some of my
happiest moments with her, especially in
her beautiful garden which she tended
with love and skill. During the last
years of her life, I was very moved to
watch her mental health gradually
deteriorate as she succumbed to dementia.
But since she passed on in December 2003,
I have increasingly come to feel her
presence as a guardian spirit in my life.
I know she is not far away. |
