display were two volumes of Elizabeth Cobbold's
scissor-cut paper Valentines, created 200 years
ago.

"Black
Gold"
"Out
of Darkness comes forth Light. Out of the Black
comes forth the Gold.
Light is the Daughter borne of Darkness."
Loïs Cordelia's exhibition
'Black Gold' is a meditation on digging deep into
the raw black living earth of our heritage to
reveal a wealth of gold and richness of colour.
From intricate paper silhouettes in sharp black
definition, painstakingly cut by hand using a
surgical scalpel, to fast and furiously painted
portraits and landscapes in iridescent gold and
shimmering colours, Loïs' artwork spans a vast
spectrum between precision and free-flowing
energy.

the portrait I
painted specially for the film, on display at the

have been painted by one of the characters,
Marlon, who is an artist himself, depicting his
late mother. In the drama, the painting is
knocked off the wall and badly damaged, so that
Marlon must repair it. Hence it has a crucial
significance to the development of the drama.

Paper-cut Art Workshop
Saturday 22nd May
2010, 10am - 4pm, Howden Park Centre, Livingston
EH54 6AE
"Lois Cordelia will
demonstrate and teach the basic techniques of her
intricate paper-cut creations, and present a
brief overview of the folk-art origins of this
unusual medium. You
will explore your own creativity in cutting
spirited paper 'silhouettes' by hand, using a
scalpel, balancing the blade's precision with
free flowing lines. Lois will guide you through
the evolving stages of design, drawing and
cutting, encouraging you to experiment with
elements of pattern, colour and texture,
re-evaluating the humble piece of paper: no
longer merely as a canvas, but as a medium in its
own right. Create
something extraordinary out of something
ordinary."
"Excellent
workshop giving a good grounding in the basics of
paper-cut silhouette art - more of these types of

"Es ist eine ganz besondere Atmosphaere hier
in der Ausstellung, und alles wird bestimmt seine
Spuren hinterlassen!"
"Ist es die handwerkliche Kunst oder sind es
die geschwungenen Linien, die mich begeistern?
Wahrscheinlich beiden. Das Schoenste ist: in fast
allen Bildern ist Bewegung!"
"Vielen Dank fuer diese bezaubernd, sehr
aussergewoehnliche Kunst und die vielen
Hintergrundsinformationen."
"Wir gratulieren Lois für ihre Erfolge. Sie
ist eine wirkliche Künstlerin mit
außerordentlich überzeugenden und zu Herzen
gehenden Motiven und einer genialen
Gestaltungsgabe!"
"Eine wunderschoene Entdeckung!"

your medium. There is life in your horses and
that is very rare!"
