Silhouette Paper-cut Demonstration
by Lois Cordelia (scalpel) and Erika Bulow-Osborne (scissors)

Lois Cordelia and her mother Erika demonstrated the techniques of
silhouette paper-cut art, respectively using scalpel and scissors

at the Reg Driver Visitor Centre, Christchurch Park, Ipswich IP4 2BX
Friday 8th, Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th April,
10.00am-4.30pm (3.30pm on Sunday)

as part of the inaugural weekend for a new 2 year historical display to mark
the 250th anniversary (in 2012) of the birth of Ipswich legend
Margaret Catchpole,
as well as to celebrate the legacy of the local
Cobbold dynasty.

The silhouette paper-cut and Scherenschnitt demonstration evoked in particular the exquisite contributions to this genre by
Elizabeth Cobbold (née Knipe, 1764–1824). On display were two volumes of Elizabeth Cobbold's scissor-cut paper Valentines, created 200 years ago.

For more general information about the longer-term exhibition,

Cobbold Family History website:

"Black Gold"

"Out of Darkness comes forth Light. Out of the Black comes forth the Gold.
Light is the Daughter borne of Darkness."

Loïs Cordelia's exhibition 'Black Gold' is a meditation on digging deep into the raw black living earth of our heritage to reveal a wealth of gold and richness of colour. From intricate paper silhouettes in sharp black definition, painstakingly cut by hand using a surgical scalpel, to fast and furiously painted portraits and landscapes in iridescent gold and shimmering colours, Loïs' artwork spans a vast spectrum between precision and free-flowing energy.

Comments from visitors to Black Gold January-March 2011:

"Authentic roots artist with a universal eye for beauty in all its forms."

"Amazing! No words to describe the talent."

"I came, I saw, I am impressed."

"Fabulous! Luminous! Dreamlike! ... Best exhibition we've ever had here."

"Amazing! (What else did I expect?!) Honestly, your work never ceases to impress."

"Great opportunity to see the artist in action."

"I think I said 'amazing' about 6 times when talking to you - but nevertheless - amazing still."

"A privilege to be amongst such great artists, legends, past and present - their spirits can be felt in the room."

"Lovely to see your work for real - even better than on the website."

"Amazing colour and deep soul in all your images. I love your work. Soul food!"

[Below] Standing beside the portrait I painted specially for the film, on display at the premiere at BAFTA. The portrait is supposed to have been painted by one of the characters, Marlon, who is an artist himself, depicting his late mother. In the drama, the painting is knocked off the wall and badly damaged, so that Marlon must repair it. Hence it has a crucial significance to the development of the drama.

Silhouette Paper-cut Art Workshop
Saturday 22nd May 2010, 10am - 4pm, Howden Park Centre, Livingston EH54 6AE

"Lois Cordelia will demonstrate and teach the basic techniques of her intricate paper-cut creations, and present a brief overview of the folk-art origins of this unusual medium. You will explore your own creativity in cutting spirited paper 'silhouettes' by hand, using a scalpel, balancing the blade's precision with free flowing lines. Lois will guide you through the evolving stages of design, drawing and cutting, encouraging you to experiment with elements of pattern, colour and texture, re-evaluating the humble piece of paper: no longer merely as a canvas, but as a medium in its own right. Create something extraordinary out of something ordinary."

"Excellent workshop giving a good grounding in the basics of
paper-cut silhouette art - more of these types of art events please!"

"Will use in future projects - really clear instructions."
