Old Norse: Óğinn, Angglo-Saxon:
Woden, Old High German: Wotan)
Odin is chief of the Old Norse pantheon
and ruler of Asgard. He carries a
rune-covered spear, hewn from the
branches of the World Ash Tree,
Yggdrasil. He willingly hanged himself in
this Tree for many days in a gesture of
self-sacrifice, for which he also paid
the price of one of his eyes, in order to
learn wisdom. He is accompanied by two
ravens, Huginn and Muninn (Thought and
Memory) who fly throughout the world to
bring him tidings of events. Odin gives
his name to Wednesday, the Day of Woden.
