Mary Magdalene
recognises Jesus after his resurrection
and reaches out to touch him, but he says
to her: Touch me not; for I am not
yet ascended to my Father (John
20:17). The
figure of Mary is black on white, while
Jesus is white on black, hence they
literally cannot touch each other without
disappearing! The rhythmic lines suggest
the tension and gravity between them.
