Inspired by the
ancient Norse legend of the World Ash
Tree or Tree of Life, Yggdrasil
(pronounced Eeg-draw-sil), which
links the various realms of the world.
Its branches are covered in wise and
mysterious runes. A serpent, Nidhogg,
is coiled around its three mighty roots,
gnawing at them constantly. In this
image, I have interpreted Yggrasil
and the Serpent in terms of a symbiotic
relationship, each depending on the other
for support and nourishment, a symbol of
the fragile balance of the web of life.
The knot-work serpent is strongly
inspired by the Celtic tradition, as
above.
