Free-Dance in Essex and Suffolk

"The only way you can get this dance wrong is by not coming along!"

Free-Dance events have been running in Ipswich since 2014 and in Colchester since 2017. Daniel Rounding, Sue Azar and Lois Cordelia who jointly manage the not-for-profit sessions are keen to encourage more people to attend, experience and benefit from Free-Dance: for fun, for fitness, and for therapy.

If you have ever spontaneously tapped your foot to music, Free-Dance is for you. At each Free-Dance event we invite you to let go your inhibitions and move to music in a spontaneous and non-prescribed way by allowing the music’s rhythms, lyrics and harmonies to create a physical response in a gentle or more vigorous way.

Only you can dance your dance :-)

Our Free-Dance sessions provide the ambience and the space in which to explore your dance. The lights are low, the space is non-judgemental, and the music is surprisingly varied. (Play-list requests and suggestions are always welcome.) You dance just for you, not for anyone else, which ensures your dance is authentic and always original - it’s yours and it’s always different. Noone can tell you it's wrong or that you missed a step. If you stumble, make it part of the dance.

Everyone is welcome, regardless of fitness level, body size, ability, age or ethnicity. The only pre-requisite is a simple willingness to explore moving to music. It’s also a great way to keep fit and have fun.

What to bring and what to wear

Please bring a bottle of water with you, and maybe an energy bar or snack if you think you'll need one. We recommend that you wear loose-fitting clothing in layers that you can take off as you get too warm. You are welcome to dance bare-foot at either venue, though please note that the floors may not be spotlessly clean.

Cost

The cost to attend one of our regular Free-Dance evenings operates on a sliding scale of between £3 - £16, depending on what you can afford. Contributions simply go in the box on the table, and go towards expenses such as venue hire, audio equipment, and so on.

Welcome and Closing Circles

We begin every session with an informal seated circle, especially to welcome any newcomers. Please try to arrive promptly at 6.45 pm for a welcome circle shortly before 7 pm, followed by 2 1-hour playlists with a short break in the middle. The first half consists of slower, contemplative music, and the second half is more energetic, upbeat and vigorous. We end each session with a similar circle, to share any thoughts and responses to the free-dance and news of upcoming sessions.

When & where does it happen?

Colchester, Essex (arrive 6.45 pm) 7 - 9 pm
We meet to free-dance in Colchester on the second Wednesday of every month at the Methodist Church Hall, 47 Wimpole Road, Colchester CO1 2DE. Please note that the doors have to be locked at 7pm, so please arrive in good time.

Ipswich, Suffolk (arrive 6.45 pm) 7 - 9 pm
We meet to free-dance in Ipswich on the last Saturday of every month at the Quaker Meeting House (Friends' Meeting House), 39 Fonnereau Road, Ipswich IP1 3JH. The doors of this venue are not locked, so you are free to arrive late or leave early if you need to.

Art & Free-Dance Events at Witnesham, near Ipswich

In addition to the regular monthly free-dance sessions, we run special fun events for all ages combining free-dance with art, providing a unique opportunity to explore your creative side with colour and movement. Come along for the afternoon and have a go at making your marks with colourful paints, pastels, clay, and so on, while being inspired by and moving to music in a free and spontaneous way.

Our next Art & Free-Dance event is Saturday 27th October 2018 at Witnesham Village Hall, Church Lane, Witnesham IP6 9JD. Venue website: witneshamvillagehall.co.uk

What to bring and what to wear
All art materials are supplied (though you are welcome to bring your own). Simply come with the willingness to explore colour and movement. No previous experience is neccessary. Gentle guidance provided if needed. Please also bring vegetarian food to share and we'll have lunch on arrival, following a brief welcome circle. We recommend that you wear loose-fitting clothing in layers that you can take off as you get too warm. You are welcome to dance bare-foot at this venue, though please note that the floors may not be spotlessly clean.
