Ephemera-inspired designs
Inspired by my love of history and heritage, I combine intricately detailed depictions of notable landmarks, people, emblems, flora, fauna and folklore to create rich tapestries that evoke Victorian ephemera but also contemporary trends of junk journalling, shabby chic and scrapbooking. I often work most effectively from old, grainy photographs, balancing precision with atmosphere. Each design effectively becomes a 'postcard', complete with a postmark that bears a relevant date stamp, as for example the launch date of a trail. The designs are painted using sponge, monoprinting, palette knife, brush, finger nails, stencilling and other techniques, with the most intricate detail being etched or scratched back into the paint. The loose backgrounds are typically sponged and then violently splattered to inject energy and spontaneity. Ornate borders, decorative floral motifs and inttricate silhouettes tie the whole design together. Designs are naturally sympathetic to heritage environments.
